Electronic Filing by Lawyers
The Supreme Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Canada wanted to conduct a survey among members of the Canadian legal community to explore issues related to electronic filing. The objective was to identify the perceptions of Canadian lawyers with respect to electronic filing in order to help develop the range and characteristics of electronic filing services.
A self-administered questionnaire was sent by mail to 5,000 potential respondents, whose names were drawn from a list obtained from Canadian Lawyer. All potential respondents were members of the Bar. A total of 409 surveys were returned, representing a response rate of 8%. Conducted at the end of a fiscal year, there was no time for reminder letters (or budget for reminder phone calls). Slightly more than 20% of respondents completed the survey in French. The margin of error on a sample this size is +/- 5%, 19 times out of 20.
